3 Tips Before Your Headshot Session

Your headshot is everywhere. At least it should be. From your website to your social media, press kit and beyond—Your personal brand is more important than ever. Have a look at these three tips to help you get the most out of your next headshot session.

1. Use a Mirror to Develop Your Message

Our faces are very expressive and send a myriad of nonverbal cues. Since headshots prominently feature faces, it’s a good idea for people to consider the message they want to send through their photographs before going to a headshot session. One of the best ways to hone in on your expressions is to spend some time in front of a mirror. How do you want to be perceived? For example, some people want to be seen as warm and approachable, while others prefer to appear cool and focused. Decide what aligns with your brand. It’s up to you!

2. Select Your Color Palette

Avoid wearing colors that closely match your skin tone. They can be distracting. For example, don’t wear a tan shirt if you have tan skin. The idea is to highlight your face, rather than have it blend with your clothing. Neutral colors (like charcoal) and jewel tones (like sapphire, ruby, or emerald) tend to work well with most skin types. It’s always good to bring more than one clothing option to your shoot. This gives you and your photographer the freedom to create different looks.

3. Ask Questions

Communication builds rapport between you and your photographer, and it will help make your shoot comfortable and productive. Talk to your photographer before the day of your shoot and let them know what you have in mind. Ask any questions you may have. Need more help with clothing colors? Curious about the retouching process? Bring it up!
